Want to lead impactful AMR research? Statens Serum Institut is hiring a Senior Research Scientist for a 1-year part-time role focused on ExPEC and pathogen decolonization. Join a high-profile international effort and help shape global health.

About the Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics
The Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics at Statens Serum Institut (SSI) is central to Denmark’s infectious disease preparedness, with cutting-edge sequencing, surveillance, and translational research capabilities. Our interdisciplinary team works at the forefront of bacterial genomics, pathogen surveillance, and microbial ecology.

To strengthen our research on antimicrobial resistance and bacterial colonization, we are seeking a Senior Research Scientist with expertise in extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) and translational approaches to combat colonization and transmission.

About the Position
This new 1-year position will play a central role in developing and executing an externally funded research program focused on ExPEC—a leading global cause of urinary tract and bloodstream infections. The program will emphasize prevention, colonization biology, and high-impact translational research.

You will be expected to:

  • Lead and coordinate research on the epidemiology and molecular biology of ExPEC
  • Develop and test novel strategies for preventing and reducing colonization
  • Mentor colleagues and junior scientists in competitive grant writing
  • Publish high-impact scientific articles and communicate findings to public audiences
  • Represent the department at scientific symposia and international collaborations
This position supports SSI’s broader goals in antimicrobial resistance, pathogen genomics, and One Health research.

Your Qualifications
You have a master´s degree. Please note that your master’s degree must be equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc + 180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc).

You must have:

  • A PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, epidemiology, environmental health, or a related public health discipline
  • A strong research portfolio in microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, and genomics
  • Documented experience with E. coli, especially ExPEC strains
  • A strong track record of obtaining external research funding
  • Senior-level leadership experience
  • Experience communicating science to policymakers and the public
Experience with One Health collaborations and translational research in both high- and low-resource settings is an advantage.

We Offer

  • An internationally visible role at the heart of Denmark’s AMR research
  • Close collaboration with leading Danish and international partners (e.g., KU, AU, Rigshospitalet, LMIC institutions)
  • Access to advanced sequencing infrastructure and Denmark’s integrated surveillance systems
  • A supportive and collegial environment prioritizing impact-driven, interdisciplinary science
Employment Terms
You will be employed as a Senior Research Scientist under the current collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Your scientific qualifications will be assessed by an expert academic panel according to standard procedures for researchers with scientific duties at government institutions.

For the purpose of assessing research qualifications, a list of publications and 3–5 scientific works must be submitted. The research qualifications will be evaluated by an academic assessment committee appointed in accordance with the applicable job structure for scientific staff with research duties at sector research institutions.

The position is part-time, 18.5 hours per week and is limited to 1 year.
