The recently launched project Moving Data – Moving People (2020-2024) is looking for a motivated part time research assistant. The part-time position, lasting 10 weeks, primarily consists of the cross-platform collection of Chinese language online data on China’s Social Credit System. This collection is part of the set-up phase of the project, and the output is an extensive, organised data set. The expected starting data is October 1 or as soon as possible thereafter, and the work place is the ETHOSLab at the IT University in Copenhagen. The ETHOSLab is a methods Lab at ITU that provides an exciting research environment for both the research and student communities in experimenting with methods. The work involves close collaboration with Co-Investigators at the Institute for Politics and Society at Aalborg University. Job description Search and identify relevant materials on China’s Social Credit System Search a range of media types from government databases to print media, social media and academic journals Produce timelines of debates and emerging topics Identify and develop thematic groupings of data across source types Organise and store sources securely Synthesize key characteristics of the resulting database. The ideal candidate should document that they have: Chinese reading skills at a native or near-native level (corresponding to a master’s degree in China studies) English language skills at a good level An interest in Chinese society, politics and the Chinese media landscape Experience with collecting a range of data in Chinese The ability to detect and highlight matters of importance in a large data set The capacity to distinguish between ongoing and passing debates The skills to organise the resulting dataset systematically in a way that is accessible to project members Structured approach to work tasks, strong communication and organizational skills and the capacity to work independently. These skills are strong in a range of disciplinary backgrounds.
