We are currently looking for a Section Manager for the IT and Bioinformatics unit in the Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics at Statens Serum Institut. Are you ready to combine leadership, collaboration, and optimisation of IT processes? Then this position is a great match for you.

Job content
You will serve as the Section manager of the department’s IT and Bioinformatics unit, which consists of 6 employees, including software engineer, system administrators and bioinformaticians. It is a young and well-functioning team that values a personal leadership style with active involvement in processes and decision-making.

Your tasks will include, among other things:

  • Day-to-day operations as head of the IT and Bioinformatics section.
  • Ensuring overview, coordination and prioritisation of the section’s tasks and activities across the institute.
  • Developing the unit’s competencies in line with the department’s NGS strategy and data management.
  • Coordinating automation projects with a focus on collaborative coding and having overall responsibility for the section’s quality work.
  • Advising stake holders and making decisions on IT and WGS hardware and computer networking solutions.
  • Developing Python-based scripts for bioinformatics analyses.
  • Developing and deploying ansible scripts for Linux HPC cluster management.
Your background
You have a relevant academic education within bioinformatics, computational biology or similar, and preferably experience with personnel management. In addition, you have a fundamental understanding of microbial genomes as well as programming and pipeline development.

Experience and qualities that will help you succeed in the position:

  • Have experience in working across public health areas, e.g. foodborne, viral and AMR pathogens.
  • Ability to create structure in varied and complex tasks.
  • Strong background in Python development and implementation of Bioinformatics analyses and workflows.
  • Competence in tool packaging in conda and pypi.
  • Familiarity with snakemake, Galaxy and IRIDA.
  • Knowledge of database technologies (SQL, mongodb) and API’s.
  • Expertise in general IT and WGS equipment.
  • Committed and take responsibility for your tasks.
  • Quality-conscious and detail-oriented.
  • Good collaboration and communication skills in English (the primary language in the section). Danish is the corporate language of the organization.
  • Thrive in an interdisciplinary environment.

Your future team
The Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics at SSI is part of the national diagnostic infectious disease preparedness and is responsible for tasks within sequencing and the bioinformatics setup for analyses of a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms in Denmark. The department consists of approximately 30 employees, divided into 3 units, as well as several researchers who report directly to the Head of Department.

The two units are a sequencing section consisting of 5 laboratory personal and a newly established IT and Bioinformatics section. This latter section is responsible for development and operation of bioinformatics pipelines, as well as operation and maintenance of private cloud solutions. The data analysed in the section are primarily sequenced in the sequencing unit and consist of samples for national surveillance as well as research projects. The section ensures that data are logged, quality-assured, and that pipelines are available for analysis in collaboration with relevant professional groups and departments at SSI.

Terms of employment
Employment will be as senior consultant with personnel management responsibilities in accordance with the current collective agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikernes Centralorganisation).
