At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a 3-years position as professor within the field of Environmental Biotechnology is open for appointment from 1 January 2026, or soon thereafter. The position is 7,4 hours per week (20% of full time) and the workplace is in Aalborg. 

Your work tasks    
The specific activities under this position should focus on collaborative projects in environmental biotechnology related to wastewater treatment, resource recovery and implementation of novel technologies in the field on top. Examples are extraction, characterization and applications of biopolymers from waste biomass, biological processes related to enhanced biological phosphorus removal from wastewater or microbiology and mitigation of greenhouse gasses. A strong partnership with utilities and industry is important to ensure that the research has tangible practical applications and societal impact. 

The position will be anchored in Center for Microbial Communities with approx. 50 scientists at various career levels, working with structure and function of microbial communities, primarily related to environmental microbiology and biotechnology. The Center has state of the art equipment for DNA analyses, computing and advanced microscopy. The candidate must demonstrate a high degree of experience and original scientific production at highest international level within relevant areas of environmental biotechnology related to wastewater treatment, resource recovery and implementation of novel technologies in the field.

Your Competencies
A Professor position at Aalborg University encompasses both research and research-based teaching. Documentation of comprehensive teaching experience and curriculum development in relevant topics at university level is a prerequisite. 

The suitable applicant must demonstrate a documented high level of original scientific production at an international level, including proven development of the research area in question. An assessment of the candidate’s involvement in research management and/or other management functions will also be considered. In addition, the applicant is expected to have suitable teaching qualifications relevant for the educations at Department of Chemistry and Bioscience in particular the BSc and MSc programs in biotechnology. Previous experience with sustainable development and management of education, teaching, innovation and industrial collaboration will be considered in the overall assessmen

Qualification requirements
Applicants must be able to document a high degree of original academic production at an international level and experience from teaching at different levels. Including tests/exams, course/study programme management as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material.

Emphasis is placed on the extent, to which the applicant, has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.

Emphasis may moreover be placed on the applicant’s ability to carry out and develop research-based public-sector consultancy. Also, emphasis will be placed on an assessment of the applicant’s ability to perform research and teaching management tasks and possibly fulfil other functions, for example in relation to the university’s external cooperation.

Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant's ability to undertake pedagogical supervision, supervision and academic assessment work.
