The Department of Electronic Systems at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for a postdoc in the field of machine learning and decisions applied in cooling systems as per January 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 2,5 years.
In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The department plays an active role in transferring inventions and results into applications in close collaboration with industrial partners worldwide. Your work tasks
The postdoctoral position is funded by the Sustainable Water-based Cooling in Megacities (SWiM) project, supported by the Poul Due Jensen Foundation. The SWiM project aims to develop robust and resilient cooling solutions for buildings and urban environments, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions, with a strong focus on hydronic cooling.
The research will centre on developing and applying machine-learning methods grounded in control and game theory, including reinforcement learning and multiobjective stochastic optimisation. These methods will be applied to cooling solutions at the building, district, and city scale, where innovative and energy-efficient approaches are urgently needed.
In addition to research activities, the postdoc will spend approximately 30% of the time on scientific project administration. This will include supporting the project PI in monitoring scientific progress and ensuring that project objectives and milestones are met.
Your competencies
The candidate must have a strong background in control theory, reinforcement learning, and game theory, and is expected to have experience with the practical implementation of control algorithms.
Who we are
Learning and Decision at AAU, founded in 2020, focuses on developing mathematical methods to support decision-making by integrating physical models and sensor data. These methods are validated through industrial case studies, with a particular emphasis on critical infrastructures where complexity, large datasets, physical modeling, optimization, and safety and security are key factors. Our main showcase is the water sector, where we have designed and built a specialized laboratory focused on potable water, wastewater systems, and district heating/cooling systems.
