Postdoc of single molecule biophysics and single cell biophysics
  • Københavns Universitet
  • Njalsgade 136, 2300 København
Description of the scientific environment

The position is in the group of. Prof Nikos S Hatzakis. The group combines single protein biophysics, single cell biophysics and quantitative image analysis using machine learning to understand and control the role of protein dynamics on biomolecule recognition and cellular response regulation.

Short Project description

The post-doc will be working on establishing fluorescent microscopy assays often at the single molecule level to study the interaction of proteins with model membrane systems, and cellular membranes, as well as understanding at the cellular levels the mechanism underlying delivery of pharmaceutics. The post-doc will be using single particle fluorescence microscopy (TIRF and confocal as well as lattice light sheet microscopy), fluorescence lifetime imaging techniques, and quantitative image analysis. The post-doc will be interacting tightly with machine learning analysis of my group and collaborating groups, single cell biophysics. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Formal requirements

In order to be considered, the applicant must have:

  • A PhD degree in either biophysics, chemistry, nanoscience, or a similar field.
  • A documented experience in:
    • Fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy
    • Assembling new microscopy setups
    • Statistical analysis and computational image analysis.
    • Writing and understanding scientific software including Matlab and Python for quantitative image analysis, and treating large datasets.
    • Cell culturing, handling, and use for live cell fluorescence microscopy imaging.
    • Molecular biology (PCR, traditional/Gibson assembly cloning, purification, and SDS/agarose electrophoresis).
    • Biomolecule characterization preferably at the single molecule level
    • Interaction of biologicals with membrane and delivery in cells
    • Spectroscopy and FRET
  • Excellent and documented English communication skills
  • The ideal candidate should have a strong publication record, be able to work independently within an international cross-disciplinary group, and have to supervise students.
Skills of additional interest include

  • Expertise in single molecule microscopy, fluorescence lifetime imaging, and analysis of microscopy datasets
  • Expertise in molecular biology and protein characterization
  • Previous experience in single molecule fluorescence microscopy building
  • Experience with handling model membrane systems (liposomes)
  • Documented expertise of working in an international multicultural environment
  • Documented good teaching skills
  • Experience with graphical programs for preparing compelling scientific figures
The postdoc’s duties will include research within single cell biophysics as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.
