The Department of Social Sciences and Business (ISE), Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD fellow linked to the international research project SustainCare from June 1st, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years.
The SustainCare projectThe PhD fellow will contribute to the aims of the NORDFORSK funded SustainCare project, which seeks to develop knowledge and solutions for more sustainable, equitable and community-based long-term care (LTC) for older people across Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Lithuania. SustainCare is theoretically and empirically concerned with how formal and informal care systems intersect, how inequalities in care access and outcomes emerge, and how new forms of collective support in the shape of Community Circles/Fællesskabscirkler might reshape the politics and practices of care for older people. In the project, we look specifically at how the need for care in old age will evolve in the four countries, the mix between formal and informal care provision and implications for care poverty, and the implications of community-based Community Circles/Fællesskabscirkler for equality in care provision.
The Phd projectThe PhD project will contribute to the SustainCare project formulating an independent research project that contribute to the investigation of the dynamics of older people’s care needs, and care provision and policies. It is expected that the project draws on, to the extent possible, the SustainCare framework, while working in close collaboration with the project team, sharing research protocols and analysis.
Projects that address the SustainCare project special focus of how national policies problematize and seek to ensure sustainable LTC, and how these policy perspectives align with the perspectives of users and other stakeholders will be prioritised. Besides policy documents, the PhD will have the opportunity to draw on survey data and interviews with users and other stakeholders.
Potential approaches to this topic may (but does not need to) include activities such as:
- Work comparatively across at least 2 countries but preferable across all four countries;
- Combine quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore the projects’ questions;
- Contributing to comparative and interdisciplinary analysis in cohort with the wider project team.
