SDU Civil and Architectural Engineering (CAE) invites applications for one or more vacant positions as Assistant Professor in Structural Engineering, focusing on concrete bridges and especially bridge aerodynamics in the research group SDU Structures. The position(s) is to be filled by March 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Job Description
The primary responsibilities of the position(s) include research, teaching and supervision. Focusing on concrete structures and bridge aerodynamics, the successful candidate will carry out research within one or more of the research focus areas of the research group, as listed below. The group’s research areas involve traditional and innovative concrete and timber structures and assessment methods for determining the structural safety of existing structures. The successful candidate will be able to contribute to and preferably build upon the existing areas of the research group. The research activities will be linked to the educational programmes in Civil Engineering, where the selected candidate will contribute to teaching and supervision in the areas of structural engineering.
Research focus areas
SDU Structures focuses on experimental and analytical research of concrete and timber structures. The experimental research is predominantly carried out in the SDU Structures laboratory which is equipped with state-of-the-art testing and data acquisition equipment for structural testing. Within structural concrete research, the group is currently active in the following areas:
Concrete plasticity and limit analysis.
Capacity and strengthening of existing structures.
Residual load-bearing capacity of damaged existing structures.
Design, optimization and calculation of robotically printed concrete structures.
Sustainable concrete with a focus on the structural part.
Circular design and reuse of structural concrete elements.
Behaviour and development of design methods for structural concrete.
Design and strength of connections for concrete and timber structures.
Aerodynamic stability and wind-induced response of long-span bridges.
Probabilistic assessment structures and structural elements. Including focus on uncertainty modelling of structural models and load models (e.g. wind loads on structures).
Teaching
The position involves participation in teaching activities, including teaching structural engineering courses and supervising student projects in the Civil Engineering programmes. SDU Structures contribute significantly to the following educational programmes:
Professional Bachelor (BEng) in Civil Engineering
BSc in Civil and Architectural Engineering
MSc in Civil and Engineering, with a specialization track in structural engineering
The selected candidate will be enrolled in the Lecturer Training Programme at SDU to strengthen the candidate’s educational and pedagogical skills.
Qualifications
The candidate must hold a PhD degree in structural engineering or similar.
Internationally competitive research experience within concrete structures or structural aerodynamics.
Strong research outcome during or as a result of the PhD project
Preferably Postdoc or similar experience
A strong research potential
