The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of South-ern Denmark (SDU) invites applicants for one or more positions in Computer Science on As-sistant Professor (tenure-track) and/or Associate Professor levels with a focus on Bioinfor-matics and Computational Medicine.
The expected starting date is fall 2025, with room for flexibility.
What we are looking for
We are looking for new colleagues who can strengthen or add to our competences in the field of Bioinformatics and Computational Medicine as part of our Data Science and Statistics section. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the department’s strategic development in data science, artificial intelligence, and algorithm development in the biomedical context. We are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in candidates with competence in multi-modal data integration, including electronic health records, omics analysis and association studies as well as tool and pipeline development for latest experimental technologies.
What we expect
Successful candidates will have to fulfil the following key selection criteria:
Research:
Successful candidates to the associate professorship positions should also have:
Demonstrated success in building and leading dynamic research teams and a strong track record of developing and executing research and innovation will be a plus.
Teaching:
Successful candidates to the associate professorship positions should also have:
The tenure-track assistant professorship positions
For the tenure-track assistant professor positions, applications from promising early-career talents are highly encouraged. The Danish tenure-track employment is a focused assistant professorship with a guaranteed assessment for a position as tenured associate professor: before the end of the sixth year of employment and contingent on a positive academic as-sessment, the assistant professor will transit into a permanent (tenured) position as associ-ate professor. A tenure-track assistant professor can request assessment for tenure earlier. If this assessment is negative, the assistant professor can request a second assessment with-in the final six months of employment. More information about the process can be found in the tenure track procedure at the University of Southern Denmark.
Workplace description
Bioinformatics and Computational Medicine
SDU, IMADA, and the faculty of science have a strong track record in combining latest ex-perimental technologies with computational approaches as well as clinical data for the translation. Collaborations within the department, the faculty and the Odense University Hospital (OUH) are highly welcome. Additionally, the hospital is about to be moved to the Campus in a completely new, state-of-the-art building, further enabling seamless collabora-tion between the faculties. Further, the newly established Flagship project “Centre for Inte-grated Multi-Omics in Precision Medicine (CIMP)” highlights the push for the collaborative approach to establish precision medicine in clinical practice. Further, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology offers research in advanced analytical and biochemical techniques to characterize and understand gene organization, protein structure and function as well as the development of diseases. Overall, SDU offers a world-class environment for bioinformaticians with a wide range of applications and technologies.
The Data Science and Statistics section
The members of the Data Science and Statistics section cover a wide range of data science topics. Central research interests are data mining and data visualization, machine learning and artificial intelligence (deep learning, natural language processing, reinforcement learn-ing, multi-agent systems, operations research), statistics (extreme value theory, time series, functional data analysis, multivariate analysis), and bioinformatics (biological networks, multi-omics data). Meaningful addition to the section to strengthen collaboration are wel-come.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) is a thriving research hub at SDU’s main campus in Odense, with approximately 800 students and 200 staff, of which more than 60 are assistant, associate and full professors. Our research sections, in addition to the Data Science and Statistics section, include:
We also offer:
In addition to the research sections mentioned above, the research environment at the de-partment covers a wide area of topics in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical and IT didactics. Our department’s vibrant and collaborative environment is underpinned by its commitment to research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community en-gagement.
