GEUS has a vacent position for a researcher within the general field of global dynamics of mineral and raw materials supply and demand. In this role, you will become part of the Danish mineral intelligence centre (D-MIC) that works on all aspects of mineral value chains to assess security of supply and to develop solutions to future resource challenges. This position is a three-year appointment, and is to be filled as soon as possible.

About the position

The position is based at D-MIC which is a centre that delivers research-based analyses of the supply, demand, scarcity, vulnerability, and dynamics of mineral resources and raw materials at both global and national scales. These analyses are conducted in support of Danish government institutions, industry, and other relevant stakeholders. The successful candidate will undertake research in industrial ecology applied to mineral commodities with a focus on material flow analysis (MFA) and/or global value chain analysis as well as closely related areas. The research will focus in particular on raw materials that are critical for enabling green energy transition technologies and other strategic sectors. As part of the position, the successful candidate will work with criticality assessments and the modelling of supply chain dynamics, including system integration, vulnerabilities, and potential disruptions.

Who are you?

You hold a PhD and have documented research experience in areas relevant to D-MIC. You are able to work both independently and as part of interdisciplinary teams, and you possess strong collaboration and communication skills. You demonstrate excellent analytical capabilities, and maintain a strong research focus with a clear ambition to publish your results in leading international peer-reviewed journals. You are also willing to contribute to D-MIC’s broader mission of delivering research-based advice to public authorities and industry, as well to disseminate results through D-MIC’s various publication formats. Furthermore, you are motivated to supervise students, attract external funding, develop competitive research proposals, and initiate and shape new research projects.

You must be able to communicate in English, and since the primary language of the organisation is Danish, you should be prepared to learn Danish.

Meet your new colleagues

You will become part of D-MIC team in the Department for Mapping and Mineral Resources – a research department with a strong focus on the geological mapping of Greenland. We also conduct research on rocks, their mineralogy and chemical composition, and their genesis and evolution, and we use this insight to provide the geological background for investment opportunities in exploration for mineral resources and data for responsible natural resource management. For this work, we have considerable in-house analytical facilities, including major and trace-element analysis, isotopic composition and analytical microscopy. In addition to the above-mentioned tools, we acquire and analyse high-resolution stereographic images of mountain walls in our photo-laboratory, which provide our geologists with a powerful tool for development of 3D geological mapping on metres to tens of kilometres scales. We are approximately 28 employees in the department, inclusive i.a. researchers, consultants, laboratory technicians
