POSITION OVERVIEW The Danish Institute for Human Rights (the Institute) is the national human rights institution in Denmark with a mandate to work internationally.

The Institute has a strong engagement in East and West Africa. The project manager will be part of the Human Rights Africa department, working closely with colleagues at HQ level as well as our 21 colleagues across seven African countries. You will work on several projects in Africa, including our projects with the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and with the Conseil National des Droits de l’Homme in Côte d’Ivoire. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on human rights in our partnership countries in Africa and is ideal for a professional with 3-5 years of experience in project management, particularly in the fields of human rights or development cooperation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
  • Manage the projects in accordance with the Institute´s project management and administration procedures, including planning, budgeting, monitoring and reporting.
  • Support in the implementation of a large multi donor pool fund project with the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of projects in West Africa, including in the Sahel region and in Côte d’Ivoire.
  • Together with the project controller and accounting, maintain financial responsibility and budget oversight of the projects.
  • Deliver a range of project administration tasks such as drafting MoUs, project contracts, terms of reference and other as required.
  • Support the governance of projects and maintain a close cooperation with donor and local partners including promoting local ownership of projects.
YOUR PROFILE
  • You enjoy project management and are keen to deepen/develop your knowledge of working with human rights and state actors.
  • You have solid experience in all steps of the project management cycle from project development, building new/maintaining strong partnerships, to the implementation and monitoring of the project, the evaluation and final reporting.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural environment with regular travels to countries in Africa.
  • You are a team player and motivated by engaging in crosscutting initiatives and discussions within the department.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • MA degree in political science, social sciences, law, global studies or similar.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience with project management, stakeholder engagement and project implementation, including financial management.
  • Experience working in international or development contexts. Working experience with or from countries in Africa is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the international human rights framework and experience of working with human rights related issues is an asset.
  • Experience in liaising and engaging with donors as well as partner organisations (e.g. international and regional organisations, national human rights institutions, civil society etc).
  • Languages: English and French are mandatory for this position. Being able to communicate in Danish is an advantage for the candidate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT The duty station is Copenhagen. The selected candidate must be permitted to work in Denmark. The position is a full-time position (37 hours per week) in accordance with the relevant Danish laws and staff guidelines. Salary is set in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, with the possibility to negotiate a qualification supplement.

Expected starting date: 1 September 2025.
