Department of People and Technology is the largest department at Roskilde University and covers a range of subject areas, broadly focused on human – society – technology interactions and covering topics as sustainable transitions of society, social entrepreneurship, urban planning, computer science, digitalization, healthcare, welfare studies, etc. The position is linked to the research group Programming, Logic, and Intelligent Systems (PLIS). In PLIS, basic research in computer science is combined with innovative applications. The construction of reliable, intelligent, and resource-efficient systems requires basic research in the mathematical and logic foundations of databases, algorithms, programming tools, and languages. PLIS contributes innovative applications in areas such as interaction design, artistic and informative installations, virtual and augmented reality, big data, bioinformatics, applications of logic in psychology, and program analysis for energy consumption and correctness.

The candidate will be expected to maintain a significant record of publications and to contribute to a strong research culture in the research group. You will also be expected to secure external research funding and engage in research networks. You will be required to teach, supervise, and assess students at BSc and MSc levels as well as PhD students. This also implies developing the field in relation to teaching. The position also requires sharing knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in the public debate.

QualificationsApplicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within computer science or a closely related field and have documented qualifications equivalent to several years of research and tertiary teaching at the level of associate professor.
We are seeking applicants with a background in Computer Science and a strong research profile in Data Science, preferably within the domain of Machine Learning. We are particularly interested in applicants with research in one or more of the following subject areas: (1) explainable AI, (2) the combination machine learning and symbolic reasoning, (3) language models or Natural Language Processing, and (4) cybersecurity. The research in the areas covered should span both basic research and innovative applications.

- Demonstrate scholarly leadership and contribute to a strong research culture
- Perform research and publish in leading international, peer-reviewed journals, supplemented with conference papers at high-ranking academic conferences
- Secure external research funding and engage in research partnerships
- Contribute to the development of the research profile of the Department and in the PLIS research group
- Develop and nurture research networks nationally and internationally, including industry and public sector partners
- Contribute to developing the educational programs of the Department
- Teach/supervise/assess PhDs, take part in the doctoral school’s teaching program, and attract new PhD students
- Act as a mentor for junior researchers with guidance and supervision
- Contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the Department including academic assessments
Candidates applying for an associate professorship as part of the promotion programmeIf the chosen candidate is employed as associate professor, they will be enrolled in the department’s professor promotion programme and, thereby, get the option of being assessed and, if successful, promoted to full professor within 2-8 years. To qualify for enrolment in the professor promotion programme, the applicant must – in addition to being qualified as associate professor – demonstrate the potential to become full professor within 2-8 years.
The ideal candidate for a tenure-track associate professorship is expected to
- Perform research and regularly publish in leading, peer-reviewed journals and conferences at an international level
- Teach courses and supervise projects in the above-mentioned educational programmes
- Attract external research funding and manage research projects in collaboration with external partners
- Contribute to the development of the research profile of the PLIS research group
- Contribute to an engaging learning environment and to developing the educational programs of the Department
- Teach/supervise/assess PhDs and attract new PhD students
Qualifications common to all applicantsApplicants should have documented experience in attracting and managing external project funding from national or international funding bodies with connected scientific publications in high-level scientific outlets. We also expect the applicant to support the development of collaboration with public and private actors that can benefit from applying the research results, as well as to develop research collaboration with other research groups within the University.
The applicant is expected to possess initiative and good collaboration skills, be visible and actively contributing to the daily activities in the PLIS research group and the connected teaching programs. Both professional and social competencies will be prioritized to create an inspiring daily working environment.
Within three years of employment, the applicant is expected to be able to teach in Danish. Experience with problem-oriented project supervision and teaching at university level is an advantage.
The ideal candidate shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills and be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.
AssessmentIn the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:
- original scientific production at an international level in relation to the above-mentioned field(s)
- development of the field
- experience with providing adaptive leadership in the development of research and teaching,
- the ability to promote and utilize research results,
- experience in teaching and education,
- ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
- proven experience in securing external research funding,
- fluency in Danish (or another Scandinavian language), English, or both – see the university’s language policy.
Potential assessment for the promotion programmeApplicants wishing to be admitted to the promotion programme must submit a completed promotion plan. Based on this plan, the assessment committee will assess and recommend in its conclusion to what extent the applicant has the potential to achieve a positive professor assessment at the end of the programme.
The final decision on admission is made by the rector and pro-rector, based on the recommendation from the dean, the application and the assessment committee's assessment. The decision on admission is made in connection with the appointment.

Terms of employmentThe employment is full-time, and you will refer to head of department Peter Kjær.
The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.
Commencing salary will be minimum DKK 705.939,49 kr. kr. per year (1st April 2025 level) plus pension contribution (18,07 %).
