A two-year postdoc position is available at the Copenhagen Section, Department of Computer Science, Aalborg University. It is enabled by a project funded by Digital Research Centre Denmark (DIREC), through its Next Generation of AI initiatives.
The position is desired to be filled no later than December 1, 2025.
Modern backend systems rely heavily on SQL databases, yet their energy footprint is poorly understood. With ICT’s energy use soaring, it is urgent to address the sustainability of database queries.
The GREENSQL project tackles this challenge by combining reproducible measurements with advanced AI models to estimate, validate, and optimize the energy consumption of SQL queries for both research and industry use.
The project involves partners including Aalborg University (AAU), Roskilde University (RUC), and the Software Improvement Group.
Your work tasks
As a postdoctoral researcher at Aalborg University, you will lead the AI modeling work in GREENSQL.
This includes designing energy-consumption models for raw, dynamic, and embedded SQL queries, training the models on the collected measurements, and refining and validating the models through feature selection.
Your work needs to consider model training efficiency and robustness to noisy measurement data, and package the best models for industry use.
You will also contribute to a joint catalogue of energy-aware SQL optimizations together with Roskilde University and the Software Improvement Group.
You will work in close collaboration with Roskilde University.
Their team will focus on measuring, collecting and analysing energy data that captures the key factors driving query-level energy consumption.
Their benchmarks and reproducible measurement datasets will provide the foundation for model construction.
You will also work with the Software Improvement Group, where you will validate the models on realistic workloads and work on model readiness for integration into software quality assessment tools.
Together, the partners will co-develop a catalogue of energy-aware SQL optimizations, ensuring that the modeling insights are translated into practical guidance for developers.
In relation to the collaboration, occational travels are expected.
