At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a Ph.D. stipend within the EU HORIZON/Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions is available within the general study program. The Ph.D. stipend is open for appointment from 01.09.2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is for 3 years, and the workplace is in Aalborg, Denmark.
Your work tasks
The PhD project focuses on the development of strategies for the removal of off-flavour compounds from aquaculture water by use of UV-AOPs.
The PhD will be involved in investigation of the equilibrium and kinetics associated with the uptake and release of off-flavour compounds. Effect of environmental factors such as water temperature and oxygen concentration will be investigated. Study of the formation and removal of off-flavour compounds. Development of numerical models for system descriptions. Lab-scale tests of a number of UV-AOPs (eg. VUV, UV/H2O2 and UV/O3) using a collimated beam approach.
The effect of water composition on the AOP efficiency will be studied. In addition, the effect of the AOP on the overall water quality (physico-chemical and microbiological) will be evaluated and the potential for optimizing the AOP conditions by such improvement evaluated.
The PhD Stipend is within the MSCA Doctoral Networks “Human footprint on water from remote cold areas to the tropical belt. INtegrated Approach TO secure water QUAlity by exploiting Sustainable processes” (IN2AQUAS), Grant number 101119555 (https://www.in2aquas.eu).
Your competencies
We are looking for one highly motivated PhD candidate with strong interest in advanced water treatment and UV technology. The PhD candidate is required to have a masters degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related field. Candidates are expected to be fluent in English (both oral and written), have good academic writing and presentation skills. Competences in analytical chemistry, photochemistry, and modelling of chemical processes are expected. Experience with advanced oxidation processes, UV technology, and water treatment is appreciated.
Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions.
