The Centre for Technology Entrepreneurship at DTU (DTU Entrepreneurship) invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position on “Early-stage financing of university spinouts”, starting in Q3 2025. The PhD project is a collaboration between DTU Entrepreneurship and UCPH Lighthouse at the University of Copenhagen. The PhD candidate hired will therefore be based at DTU Entrepreneurship but work closely with, and spend part of their working time at, UCPH Lighthouse.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD project focuses on the financing of deep tech startups emerging from European universities. These ventures are essential for addressing global challenges through breakthrough science but face unique and significant hurdles in securing capital – especially in the early stages. This PhD project investigates how to better structure, manage, and align early-stage and later-stage financing for university-based deep tech startups. The candidate hired will be expected to explore financing gaps for startups and investigate the role and effectiveness of different types of funders.
The PhD project will be supervised by Associate Professor Maria Theresa Norn at DTU Entrepreneurship. The PhD student will also work closely together with Mikkel Marfelt at UCPH Lighthouse.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The period of employment is 3 years. The position is a full-time position. The preferred starting date is 1 August 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
