Are you driven by the potential of AI in medicine? Do you want to design next-generation protein therapeutics using cutting-edge generative models and test them in real-world disease models? Join a collaborative PhD project between DTU Bioengineering and Rigshospitalet focused on migraine.

The PhD project is part of a 4-year collaboration between DTU Bioengineering and Rigshospitalet aiming to design AI-based protein binders (minibinders) targeting migraine-related GPCRs. Using state-of-the-art protein design tools, the project integrates computational design with in vitro and in vivo testing to generate and validate novel biologics beyond conventional antibody strategies. You will join a vibrant, multidisciplinary team working across computation, automation, biochemistry, and electrophysiology to push the boundaries of next-generation migraine therapies.

Responsibilities and qualifications

  • Design and implement binder libraries using generative AI tools such as RFdiffusion and ProteinMPNN.
  • Perform molecular dynamics simulations to assess binder-target interactions
  • Clone and express top candidates using high-throughput cell-free and bacterial systems
  • Perform structural and biophysical characterisation of binding proteins (i.e., CD, SPR, BLI)
  • Perform functional validation using patch-clamp systems (e.g. QPatch)
  • Interface with collaborators performing in vivo migraine models
  • Publish results in high-impact journals and present findings at scientific conferences.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary training to build expertise in both computational and experimental techniques.

You must have:

  • As a formal qualification, you must hold a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as bioinformatics, molecular biology, biotechnology, or a related discipline.
  • Expertise in either computational protein design or wet lab techniques, with a willingness to learn the complementary skill set.
  • Experience in collaborative research environments.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • A proactive attitude towards learning and applying new skills.

It would further be beneficial if you have some of the following skills:

  • Hands-on experience with protein expression systems such as bacteria, yeast, or cell-free systems.
  • Basic knowledge of protein purification techniques (e.g., affinity chromatography, size exclusion chromatography).
  • Familiarity with patch clamp approaches.
  • Exposure to computational tools like RFdiffusion, ProteinMPNN, or AlphaFold3.
  • Interest in automation and high-throughput experimental techniques.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
