Title:
SusMAT: Exploring sustainable synthesis and performance of disordered materials for direct electrochemical CO2 conversion

Research area and project description:
The development of functional materials is one of the keys to advance novel sustainable technologies, including direct electrochemical CO2 conversion. With the installation of such technologies, catalysts in large volumes are required. Sustainable materials synthesis, e.g. with focus on limited use of organic solvents and minimal metal content, is crucial in the green transition.

The project involves: (i) sustainable synthesis of selected families of electrocatalysts using mainly water as solvent, which might result in structurally disordered materials, (ii) exploring the catalytic potential of such disordered materials, (iii) investigating in situ the structural evolution during material synthesis to understand the synthetic pathway, and in operando studies of electrocatalysts in action to identify the catalyst active sites during electrocatalytic CO2 conversion.

The project will be carried out at the Dept. of Biological and Chemical Engineering (BCE) at Aarhus University. BCE is an interdisciplinary department with experts within chemical engineering, materials science and biotechnology. BCE has large research focus on the development of sustainable technologies, incl. CO2 mitigation. For more information on BCE, please visit bce.au.dk.

Project description: For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.

Qualifications and specific competences:
Applicants to the PhD position must have a master’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, nanoscience or equivalent, and the candidate must have experience with catalysis. It is beneficial if the candidate has experience with materials synthesis and analysis of X-ray scattering and/or X-ray absorption spectroscopy data.
