Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Ecoscience programme. The position is available from 01 December 2025 or later. You can submit your application via the link under 'how to apply'.
Title:Impact of Multiple Stressors on Arctic Benthos
Research area and project description:We are excited to offer a unique PhD opportunity focused on advancing our understanding of how climate change is impacting marine species and communities in the coastal waters around Greenland. The primary objectives of this project are to:
1. Document the interacting effects of biotic and abiotic drivers on species responses to warming.
2. Provide insight into the effects of adaptation on species resilience to environmental stress
This PhD project includes two main components:
1. Assessing the sensitivity of Arctic benthic species to multiple biotic and abiotic stressors
2. Investigate whether High-Arctic species have lost the capacity to tolerate heat due to long-term adaptation to cold environments.”
In addition to these core components, there is flexibility within the project for the PhD candidate to contribute their own ideas and develop complementary research questions aligned with the overall aims of the project.
The candidate will work as part of a larger research team investigating biodiversity, carbon cycling, and ecosystem dynamics. The position involves fieldwork in Greenland and a wide range of laboratory experiments at Aarhus University. The position involves field work in Greenland and a range of laboratory experiments in Denmark.
You will use a range of methods:
- Mesocoms experiments
- Parasite identification
- Transcriptomic analysis (RNA-seq)
- Field surveys
- Multivariate statistical analyses
Finally, the successful candidate is expected to contribute actively to interdisciplinary discussions and public outreach within the project.
Project description: For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.
Qualifications and specific competences:Applicants to the PhD position must, at a minimum, hold a relevant master’s degree in biology or a related field. The duration of the PhD position is 3 years.
Competence in parasitology and experience in laboratory experiments are essential, as is experience with fieldwork in coastal waters in temperate or Arctic regions. A driver’s license valid in Denmark, and experience with statistical analyses and data management in at least one relevant software program (e.g., R, PRIMER-e, python) are also required. The candidate is expected to have good oral and written English skills. Since the project involves fieldwork in Greenland, proficiency in Danish or Greenlandic is considered an advantage and will be used in the assement of the applications.
In addition, it is beneficial if the candidate has any of the following qualifications:
- Experience with public outreach
- Knowledge of Arctic ecosystems
Place of employment and place of work:The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work is Department of Ecoscience, C. F. Møllers Alle 3, building 1131, 8000 Aarhus C., Denmark.
