We are offering a PhD fellowship in organoid-infection biology commencing 01.03.2026 or as soon as possible hereafter.
Our group and research You will join our small team of scientists (currently two post docs and MSc + BSc project students) studying how microbe-host interactions affect host health, in an Evolutionary Medicine framework. We focus on
Helicobacter pylori, an ancient inhabitant of the human stomach, colonizing half of the global population but with a rapidly declining prevalence. We use mouse infection experiments, and derived gastric organoids, and screening of clinical samples to explore the impact of infection, and drug-microbe interactions. In addition, we work on evolution of the
Helicobacter genus with sampling of Zoo and wild animals.
Project description In the PhD project you will explore how age and
Helicobacter pylori infection shape the cellular composition, transcriptional programs, and developmental trajectories of the gastric epithelium. Early-life infection with
H. pylori has lifelong consequences, from chronic gastritis to gastric cancer but also protection against asthma and allergies. The cellular mechanisms by which infection perturbs epithelial development remain unclear. We will use single-cell transcriptomics, immunofluorescent microscopy and methylation sequencing to resolve this, working with stomach glands from mice and derived gastric organoid cultures.

Place of employment The place of employment is the Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics at GLOBE Institute, University of Copenhagen, Øster Farimagsgade 5, Copenhagen. This is a Center of Excellence initiated in 2020 where we study host-microbe interactions, and the impact of partner diversity on the outcome (for more information check
https://ceh.ku.dk/). We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories with on-site equipment for organoid work and high through-put sequencing. For advanced microscopy we use the nearby core facility (
