The Royal Danish Theatre is seeking an Orchestra Director, reporting to the CEO, to lead the music department and the Royal Danish Orchestra.
The music department
The Royal Danish Theatre is Denmark’s national theatre, and the music department is one of four artistic departments within this important institution for Danish society.
The music department consists of the Royal Danish Orchestra, the Chief Conductor, and the music administration. The music administration comprises eight employees and is led by an Administrative Manager.
The Royal Danish Orchestra is renowned as the world’s oldest orchestra with a long history of collaborating with celebrated conductors. As an internationally leading opera and ballet orchestra it collaborates with the Royal Danish Ballet, known for the world-renowned Bournonville tradition, and with the Royal Danish Opera. The orchestra’s repertoire each season consists of a wide-ranging program of operas, ballets, concerts and musicals in collaboration with a number of acclaimed conductors and the theatre’s Chief Conductor, Marie Jacquot.
The job
The artistic directors of opera, ballet, and drama determine the repertoire for the Royal Danish Theatre in collaboration with the Chief Conductor, within the theatre’s overall framework and strategy. The Orchestra Director is responsible for coordinating and advising the artistic directors at all stages of planning.
While the Chief Conductor holds the overall artistic responsibility for the orchestra’s artistic development, the Orchestra Director is responsible for ensuring an organizational structure that supports this development. The Orchestra Director is also responsible for making decisions in the daily operations, including artistic decisions within the scope of the overall strategy. The Orchestra Director and Chief Conductor share responsibility for ongoing communication regarding all relevant matters to ensure the Chief Conductor is involved in all significant decisions.
The Orchestra Director holds overall responsibility for the music department’s complete budget and management of the musicians and the Administrative Manager. Responsibility for managing the musicians may be delegated where appropriate and relevant.
The Orchestra Director is part of the executive management team and must ensure that the use of the Royal Danish Orchestra for productions is considered in strategic discussions as well as in all stages of planning at the executive level. To support this, the Orchestra Director must secure a mandate and coordinate with the Chief Conductor. The Orchestra Director has a particular responsibility for securing ongoing and close coordination with both ballet and opera.

Chefdirigenten har det overordnede kunstneriske ansvar for kapellets kunstneriske udvikling, men det er musikdirektørens ansvar at sikre en tilrettelæggelse som understøtter denne udvikling. Musikdirektøren træffer beslutninger i den daglige drift, herunder kunstneriske beslutninger inden for den overordnede strategi. Musikdirektøren og chefdirigenten deler ansvaret for løbende kommunikation om alle relevante forhold for at sikre, at chefdirigenten inddrages i alle væsentlige beslutninger.
Musikdirektøren har det overordnede ansvar for musikområdets samlede budget og personaleansvaret for musikerne og administrationschefen. Personaleansvaret for musikerne kan delegeres i det omfang det giver mening.
Musikdirektøren indgår i direktionen og skal sikre, at anvendelsen af Det Kongelige Kapel i forestillinger indgår i strategiske drøftelser på direktionsniveau og tages i betragtning på alle stadier af planlægningen. Til brug herfor skal musikdirektøren sikre mandat og koordinering med chefdirigenten. Musikdirektøren er særligt ansvarlig for en tæt og løbende koordinering med både ballet og opera.

- The artistic development of the orchestra, for its appropriate use across art forms, and for planning the musicians’ work in a way that secures wellbeing and prevents overload. The Orchestra Director is also responsible for organizing and conducting collective agreement negotiations for the orchestra and other performing musicians.
- Ongoing coordination with the orchestra’s board, its financial administrators, and the orchestra’s elected Artistic Committee, in collaboration with the Administrative Manager.
- Managing conductors selected by the relevant artistic leaders and the casting consultant, and soloists for symphonic concerts.
- Ensuring the execution of the orchestra’s concert program and any touring activities.
- Advising and assisting the other management teams across the organization regarding the use of other musicians and musical ensembles in relevant productions, where the orchestra is not involved, and for managing and planning these when appropriate.

- Are skilled at creating structure, direction, and transparency in decision-making processes.
- Have experience with organizational development and how to work with culture changes.
- Understand the importance of cross-functional coordination and close collaboration with union and health & safety representatives.
- Have strong understanding of processes, including experience with delegation and involving relevant stakeholders.
- Can manage and follow up on conflicts and are solution oriented.
- Are proactive but know how to listen and involve others before making decisions.
- Have solid experience with budget management and control, as well as relevant IT tools.
- Can communicate fluently in English, both spoken and written. Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.

- Afvikling af kapellets koncertprogram og eventuelle turnéaktiviteter.
- Rådgivning og støtte til teaterets øvrige ledelse om anvendelsen af andre musikere og musikalske ensembler i relevante produktioner, hvor kapellet ikke medvirker – samt administration og planlægning af disse, når det er hensigtsmæssigt.
