The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a 2-year full time position for a research scientist to work with remote sensing of drought and drought indices in Denmark.
DMI is a leading European developer and producer of remote sensing products for monitoring conditions in Denmark and the Arctic. The satellite-derived products are critical for day-to-day monitoring and for understanding the impacts of climate change. Most of the work is carried out in research and development projects through ESA, the EU’s Copernicus program and the Danish National Center for Climate Research (NCKF). You will be part of the NCKF’s Satellite and Arctic group, where you will be responsible for activities funded under the research reserve drought project which aims to improve the monitoring of the current drought situation and the country's knowledge and management of future drought. You will also be responsible for writing scientific publications.
Main Working Tasks
- Develop satellite-based products important for drought monitoring, such as soil moisture, and vegetation for Denmark.
- Improve the DMI drought indices (DMIs tørkeindeks) using satellite observations and operational monitoring of the drought situation.
- Validate satellite products and indices using in situ observations.
- Work with climate modelers to improve the representation of drought in climate model simulations using satellite products.
- Assessment of the likelihood for future drought from analysis of climate model projections.
- Present results at scientific conferences and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications/Experience
- Msc. degree in geophysics, engineering or similar within the field of drought monitoring and climate effects.
- Documented experience with satellite-derived products such as Soil Moisture and Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR), validating these products using in situ observations and presentation of data.
- Experience with drought definitions and monitoring.
- Experience with processing and displaying of near-real-time satellite products.
- Advanced programming skills in e.g. Fortran, Python or Matlab.
- Experience with Linux and operational applications.
- Good skills in oral and written English.
- Can work well in a team in close collaboration with your colleagues.
The position is in the Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI, which employs approximately 70 scientists of which 20 are located in the Satellites and Arctic unit. We have a strong international profile which is also reflected in the many nationalities here and in an English "working language".

We have approximately 350 employees, most of whom work at DMI’s new headquarters at Sankt Kjelds Gård in Østerbro. The new place has interior design that allows for an activity-based way of working.
Employment and Salary Will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. If you come from abroad, there is a possibility for a reduced tax scheme the first 7 years.
