At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment, a permanent full-time position as Associate Professor in Ocean and Coastal Engineering is open for appointment from 1st March 2026 or soon hereafter in Aalborg. The position is belonging to the Division of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the research group in Ocean and Coastal Engineering. The research group consists today of 4 tenure staff, 2 assistant professors, 1 research assistant, 1 PhD student, 1 lab technician and a handful of master students.

The research group conducts research within the field of ocean waves and hydrodynamic modelling, with particular focus on marine renewables, offshore wind and coastal structures. The research is primarily carried out through externally funded collaborative projects, involving both private and public organizations. The group has a modern and well equipped laboratory including a wave basin and a wave flume. We are looking for a candidate that has experience with physical modelling in such facilities, but also one that can contribute to the development of the numerical modelling in the group.

Your work tasks

The candidate will contribute to the teaching and research in the Ocean and Coastal Engineering Research Group. The research areas for the position will be within ocean waves and their interaction with marine structures. A research focus area of the group is expected to be climate adaptation of the Danish coastal protection. This involves for example waves in shallow water and response of coastal structures. The candidate will be able to develop own research areas within this theme, but also within the other areas covered by the group.

Teaching will primarily be in Byggeri og Anlæg (BSc) and Structural and Civil Engineering (MSc) and courses at the PhD School, but also in other study programmes at the University. Examples of teaching modules presently given by the research group are:

  • Fluid and Water Wave Dynamics (MSc),
  • Coastal, Offshore and Port Engineering (MSc),
  • The Excitation and Foundation of Marine Structures (MSc),
  • Renewable Energy Structures: Wind Turbines and Wave Energy Devices (MSc),
  • Numerical and Experimental Modelling of Wave Energy Converters (PhD),
  • Generation and Analysis of Waves in Physical Models (PhD).

Teaching and especially student supervision in classical structural engineering must also be expected.

The candidate should also contribute to the external collaborations of the group and to secure funding. The applicant should in the application describe their plans for external funding. The applicant will also contribute to revenue-funded research projects of the group which includes for example testing of rubble mound structures in our physical model testing facilities.

Your competencies

The successful candidate has a strong background within ocean or coastal engineering, and has shown independence, motivation, and the ability to initiate novel work on own initiative. The candidate shall have the ability to grow into a world-wide recognized researcher within the field. The candidate has furthermore shown to be a team-worker with focus on reaching a shared objective, and to achieve a good work-life balance by managing the demands of an ambitious career alongside personal well-being, hobbies, and family time.

In terms of scientific competence, the successful candidate has experience within physical and numerical modelling of waves and their interaction with coastal and/or offshore structures. The candidate furthermore has experience with teaching within relevant fields.

Who we are

The research group on Ocean and Coastal Engineering addresses marine engineering problems and especially with analysis and design of hard and soft structures exposed to wave actions. We have a strong background in coastal and port engineering and furthermore work on development of wave energy and offshore wind. Most of our research is focused around work in our wave flume and basin.
