The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for an Associate Professor position in the area of energy storage with a strong interest in AI, battery technology, industrial applications and cooperation for the campus in Sønderborg. The position is located at the Centre for Industrial Electronics (CIE) in Sønderborg. The position will be at the rank of Associate Professor and preferably have a starting date of January 1, 2026. The appointment is permanent.

Sønderborg is an international campus with students from more than 60 nationalities. The Faculty of Engineering is represented by the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IME). CIE is embedded in a powerhouse in electronics, which includes researchers and developers at universities and industries on both sides of the Danish-German border. CIE is an initiative striving for high quality and great impact of its research, innovation and education. Central to achieving this objective is access to state-of-the-art facilities and close collaborations with industries.

Job description

We are seeking an innovative and visionary Associate Professor in the field of Battery Technology with a strong emphasis on AI. An ideal candidate is expected to have an excellent track record in most of the following topics:

  • Battery Technology

  • Characterization of Battery Systems

  • Simulation of Battery Systems

  • Novel applications of Battery Systems

  • Development of novel BMS

and experience in creating successful collaborations between industry and academia, combined with a relevant Ph.D.

Qualifications
The candidates must have a PhD in Electrical Engineering. Commensurate with the seniority of the position applied for, we also expect:

  • Experience with industrial collaboration

  • Extensive research and publication track record

  • A track record of attracting external funding

  • Relevant teaching experience

A panel will assess the qualification of the candidates for the described post based on the submitted material, which must include: 

  • Statement of motivation.

  • Curriculum Vitae. 

  • List of publications.

  • Publications most relevant to the position.

  • Ideas for research and development (research plan).

  • An account of experience in education (Teaching Portfolio). 

  • An account of contributions to innovation in power systems and industrial collaboration.

  • A statement/documentation of other qualifications relevant to the position may also be included.

  • Relevant diplomas: Master’s and PhD degree certificates or equivalent (copy of original/official English translation).

Assessment and selection process

Conditions of employment

Appointment as an associate professor is permanent, and the preferred start date is from January 1, 2025. 

Employment as an associate professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level as well as scientific and teaching qualifications commensurate with the position as an associate professor. Employment will be in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations for academics in the state with the associated circular on the protocol for the job structure for academic staff at Danish universities and the provisions for associate professor as described herein. Further information on salary and taxation. Persons employed in the position may, based on a specific individual managerial evaluation, be exempted from time registration, also known as a “self-organizer”.
