Assistant Professor in Experimental Quantum Information Physics with Superconducting Circuits
  • Københavns Universitet
  • Njalsgade 136, 2300 København
An Assistant Professorship is available in the Superconducting Quantum Information Devices Lab (SQuID Lab) at the Niels Bohr Institute. The SQuID Lab is a research team within the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP) and Center for Quantum Devices (QDev) at the Niels Bohr Institute. Our research falls broadly within two areas of superconducting quantum information physics:

  • Novel superconducting qubits, circuits and couplers e.g. protected qubit encodings, non-standard Josephson junction physics, developing new qubit-coupling and related activities.
  • Multi-qubit superconducting systems e.g. novel control, characterization, benchmarking and calibration techniques as well as quantum error mitigation and quantum error correction.
The position will include responsibilities relevant for being part of a large data-driven culture as part of NQCP and the SQuID Lab. Moreover, the position will involve a high degree of interdisciplinarity and successful candidates are expected to work closely with multiple research and dedicated engineering teams within NQCP and at QDev towards the goal of realizing advanced multi-qubit systems for quantum error correction.

We seek outstanding candidates with a proven record of research in experimental and theoretical quantum device and quantum computing physics. The ideal candidate will have ambition to work on severa aspects of experimental quantum information physics with superconducting circuits and to become an integral part of the senior researcher team within SQuID Lab.

The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within Quantum Computing. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement. Further information on the Department can be found on the Niels Bohr Institutet – Niels Bohr Institutet - Københavns Universitet. Inquiries about can be made to Associate Professor Morten Kjaergaard (mkjaergaard@nbi.ku.dk) and Research Scientist Jacob Hastrup (jacob.hastrup@nbi.ku.dk).

Description of the scientific environment:
The Assistant Professor position will be embedded within the Superconducting Quantum Information Devices Lab (SQuID Lab), a team of roughly 15 researchers from bachelor to senior researcher level, working jointly at the Center for Quantum Devices and the Novo Nordisk Quantum Computing Programme, both located at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

The position is open from Jan 1st 2025 or by arrangement. The duration is three years with possible extension upon mutual agreement. The position is supported by grants from the ERC (Starting Grant) and Novo Nordisk Foundation (NQCP).

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
