Researcher position within atmospheric particle dispersion, numerical weather prediction and energy-weather modelling
  • DMI - København
  • Sankt Kjelds Plads 11, 2100 København Ø
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has an opening for a permanent full-time researcher position in the Weather Research Department. The successful applicant joins the work of the R&D teams in atmospheric dispersion modelling, Numerical Weather Prediction, and the recent effort to produce energy-sector-relevant forecasts.

You will be working on various research projects focused on atmospheric dispersion modelling, atmospheric chemistry, and Numerical Weather Prediction within different modelling frameworks. This includes developing and maintaining operational models and working with nowcasting. The work also involves GRIB2 encoding of NWP data, reanalysis production, and the production of forecasts relevant to the energy sector.

We will evaluate applications from both junior- and senior-level applicants. Please highlight your experiences and skills explicitly across all fields of atmospheric dispersion modelling, Numerical weather prediction, and energy-weather forecasting, as well as computational environments, coding and data processing, and research and operational development in the application.

We expect a candidate to fulfil the following qualifications:

  • PhD degree in geophysics, meteorology, earth physics, geo-sciences, engineering or similar.
  • Ability to work independently, targeted towards project milestones and deliverables while collaborating effectively with colleagues.
  • Knowledge of atmospheric dispersion modelling, atmospheric chemistry, Numerical Weather Prediction, nowcasting, and energy-weather forecasting, including reanalysis production and GRIB2 data formats.
  • Programming and code development skills in a UNIX environment (using Fortran, Python, shell scripts, git, and ECMWF-centred tools such as eccodes and ecFlow).
Experience with research leading to operational products and their subsequent maintenance.

  • Research experience and peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Skills in high-performance computing, big data and ensemble forecasting.
  • Good communication skills in both oral and written English. Danish language skills are not mandatory.
  • Capacity for working in a team together with a good team spirit.
The Weather Research Department at DMI employs a staff of approximately 60 scientists, of whom 15 currently work within the unit Ocean and Dispersion Modelling. The department also hosts the Weather Models and Flooding & Hydrology units. The department has close collaboration with other research partners nationally and internationally, and internally at DMI with, e.g. the on-duty meteorologists and the neighbouring research department, the National Centre for Climate Research. We have a strong international profile, as reflected in the many nationalities and English as the working language.
