The Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University is seeking a Data Specialist for a three-year full-time position. The position focuses on supporting the department’s data-driven research and IT security, including the development of best practices and procedures for handling large datasets generated by the department’s advanced research infrastructures.

The Department of Chemistry is one of Europe’s leading chemistry departments, with research activities spanning a broad range of chemical disciplines. The department hosts a range of specialized research instruments that generate substantial amounts of data.

You will become part of the department’s data team and a network of data managers across the Faculty of Natural Sciences, where data management, high-performance computing (HPC), and AI are strategic focus areas.

At the department, you will be part of a technical team with other academic technicians, who work with large amounts of data, both from computational and experimental research. 
 

Job description

As data manager/specialist, you will have primary responsibility for developing best practices and establishing secure and efficient procedures for managing large volumes of research data. You will work closely with research groups to understand their needs and support the implementation of data management and data storage solutions that meet both scientific and IT security requirements.

Your tasks will include:

• Developing best practices for data management and analysis across diverse research areas
• Supporting research staff in implementing data workflows, storage solutions, and documentation
• Contributing to facultywide initiatives within data management, HPC, and AI
• Ensuring that data handling procedures comply with evolving IT security standards
• Collaborating with scientific and technical staff from project idea to final implementation
• Developing solutions for data handling, exploitation and storage in collaboration with the other data scientists at the faculty
• Establishing interfaces between experimental equipment and data storage
• Assist in establishing best practices for data handling in teaching

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate with a relevant academic background, for example in natural sciences, computer science, engineering, or a related field.

We expect that you:

• Have experience with data management and/or development of IT solutions
• Have experience with recording large amounts of data using experimental equipment
• Communicate effectively and constructively in both Danish and English
• Can work collaboratively within a network of technically skilled colleagues
• Have experience with documentation and structured workflows
• Can translate diverse research needs into practical, implementable solutions
• Experience with HPC environments, research data infrastructures, or IT security is an advantage but not a requirement.
• Are proficient in English. Candidates who do not speak Danish, are encouraged to follow Danish courses.

Start date and duration of employment

The starting date is 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The duration of the employment is 36 months.
