Are you an experienced data manager with a strong interest in large-scale research data infrastructures and data governance? Do you enjoy working with complex datasets from national registries and cohort studies? And would you like to contribute to epidemiological research with high societal relevance, focusing on health throughout childhood and into early adulthood? If so, we invite you to apply for a full-time position (37 hours/week) as data manager/steward in the POPE group at the Section of Epidemiology, University of Copenhagen, starting 15 August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
About the Section of Epidemiology and the POPE group The Section of Epidemiology conducts research on determinants of health and disease across the life course, with the aim of improving public health and advancing epidemiological theory.
You will join the POPE group, whose research focuses on maternal, child, and adolescent health from a life-course perspective. Our work examines how prenatal and early childhood exposures influence health outcomes throughout childhood and into young adulthood. Research topics include preterm birth, infections and vaccinations during pregnancy, mental health, and psychiatric treatment.
The POPE group extensively uses Danish registry data and the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC), which provides rich self-reported and biological data. DNBC is a nationwide birth cohort including more than 96,000 individuals born in 1996–2003, whose mothers enrolled during pregnancy. The group is deeply involved in ongoing and future DNBC data collections, long-term follow-up, and international cohort collaborations.
About the Department The Department of Public Health provides the scientific foundation for researchers and educators who aim to improve public health, both nationally and globally, and to create greater insight into the links between health, the individual, and society, as well as the ethical, equity-related, and political implications. This is achieved through research, education, and engagement with stakeholders and the general public, along with a broad multidisciplinary research agenda that addresses most aspects of public health at a high international level.
About the Position The data manager/steward will have a supportive and collaborative role in data management, quality assurance, and governance, working closely with researchers in the POPE group, external collaborators, and other data managers at the Department of Public Health. Responsibilities will primarily include building, documenting, quality-assuring, and maintaining large-scale data infrastructures based on Danish registries and DNBC. The data manager will also be involved in establishing similar set-ups with cohort data embedded in populations of eligible participants identified through administrative data for resources other than DNBC.
Tasks and Responsibilities You will work with a diverse range of complementary tasks, taking on different responsibilities as priorities change. These include:
- Building, updating, quality checking, and governing large data infrastructures combining Danish national registries with and without DNBC data
- Establishing data set-ups where cohort data are embedded within register-based populations, including for resources beyond the DNBC
- Acting as designated administrator and primary contact person for data access and handling at Statistics Denmark and other secure platforms
- Maintaining and governing the infrastructure for federated analyses of harmonised data from multiple international cohorts
- Being responsible for monitoring, final documentation, and completion of the ongoing 25-year follow-up of the DNBC
- Establishing and governing projects involving biological samples from the DNBC
- Contributing to and testing the ongoing modernisation of the DNBC data infrastructure, enhancing sustainable data management in accordance with FAIR principles, including non-siloed omics data from biological samples
- Preparing, structuring, and delivering descriptive statistics and data for research projects within the POPE group
- Taking key responsibility for data security, exportation of analysis results, data governance, and GDPR compliance within the POPE group
As data manager in the group, you will be able to influence many of your work tasks according to your interests and qualifications, and we will support you in developing and learning new approaches relevant to your position.
Profile and Qualifications We are looking for a motivated and engaged data manager with the following qualifications:
- Experience working with Danish national research infrastructures at Statistics Denmark, the Danish Health Data Authority, the Danish National Genome Center, or similar
- A strong interest in data management, data governance, and large complex datasets
- Good interpersonal and collaborative skills, and the ability to support researchers with diverse backgrounds
- Fluency in Danish, both written and spoken
- Experience with project management, including the ability to maintain an overview across multiple parallel tasks and stakeholders
- A proactive, flexible, and solution-oriented approach, with curiosity about organisational and data processes
- A computational background, with experience handling large and complex data using SAS, R, Python, or similar tools
- An interest in (or willingness to learn about) reproductive, perinatal, or life-course epidemiology
- Knowledge of GDPR, data security, and developments in the Danish data landscape is considered an advantage
- Educational background: an MSc in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, data science, natural sciences, or related fields
Your exact educational background is less important than your interest in registry-based research and your ability to work openly, constructively, and responsibly with research data.
