The Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) at The Technical Faculty of Engineering and Science invites applications for a position of Associate Professor in Building Energy Systems and Indoor Environment. The position is available from July 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is permanent and is based at Aalborg University’s Copenhagen campus.
BUILD employs more than 200 staff across Aalborg and Copenhagen and is internationally known for its interdisciplinary approach to solving complex challenges in the built environment. You will be part of the Research Group for Building Energy Systems and Indoor Environment at BUILD, Aalborg University. The group focuses on optimizing energy performance, flexibility, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort in buildings through advanced technologies, innovative control strategies, and data-driven approaches.

The research group is recognized internationally for its contributions to sustainable building technologies and strong collaborations with industrial stakeholders. We offer access to laboratory facilities, real-world pilot cases, and a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment. 

Responsibilities
The associate professor will be expected to:

  • Conduct research within building energy systems and indoor environment, with emphasis on ventilation, heating, cooling, building dynamics and control of building energy systems.
  • Develop innovative solutions in the field of building energy systems and indoor environment and carry out related patent processes.
  • Contribute to digitalization of building energy systems, including smart control, digital twins, bus communication protocols and wireless systems.
  • Contribute to implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in building energy systems, including integration of cyber-security.
  • Enhance indoor climate by defining control strategies and developing control algorithms for demand-control ventilation, heating and cooling systems.
  • Calibrate measurement equipment and carry out experimental work in the laboratory for testing and validation of product and system performance.
  • Verify experimental results and simulate ventilation, heating and cooling systems by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Collaborate on innovative research-to-business and development projects with industrial and academic partners.
  • Develop courses, deliver lectures, exercises and workshops and serve as examiner within the field of building energy systems and indoor environment.
  • Supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, develop PhD courses and contribute to generation of new projects.

Your Experience and Competencies
We are looking for an associate professor with the following experience and competencies:

  • A PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Energy Systems, Indoor Environment, Energy Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Extensive research and development experience within building energy systems and indoor climate, with emphasis on ventilation, heating, cooling and control of building energy systems.
  • Ability to design and develop innovative ventilation products and systems, including electronics, mechanical and electrical design, as well as integration of control and automation functions.
  • Strong competences in development of control strategies and control algorithms for demand-controlled ventilation, heating and cooling systems.
  • Experience with developing/integrating sensors, actuators, controllers and communication protocols relevant to building energy systems, including bus and wireless technologies such as Modbus, Bluetooth and radio-frequency communication.
  • Strong competences in mathematical modelling and simulation of flow, heat transfer and dynamic system behaviour, including use of tools such as MATLAB/Python and CFD.
  • Strong hands-on experience with experimental work, prototype development, measurements, calibration, laboratory testing, developing automated measurement systems and verification of product and system performance, including use of tools such as LabVIEW.
  • Managing research and development projects in an industrial organization, including responsibility for personnel, resource planning and budget. 
  • Experience with intellectual property activities, such as patent processes or patent oppositions.
  • Experience with research dissemination through scientific publications, conferences, reports and guidelines.
  • Teaching experience and the ability to develop courses for BSc, MSc, PhD and industry, deliver lectures, exercises and workshops and serve as examiner.
  • Professional communication skills in English and Danish. 

Qualification requirements

Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.  

It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international standard. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.

Salary and terms of employment  
The employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (in Danish). 

Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement) (in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (in Danish). 

There is a mutual probationary period of 3 months for the position.
