Offering a high-performing, large and truly interdisciplinary research environment, the Department of Communication and Arts (DCA), Roskilde University, invites applications for a number of assistant professorships in culture, communication and/or media studies with an interdisciplinary profile to be filled from August 15th 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is time-limited for a three-year period.

We are looking for candidates with a strong research profile and an ambitious research plan who – together with colleagues – want to contribute to Roskilde University’s strategy and to the further development of the department’s ambitions. The ideal candidate wants to enhance their already interdisciplinary research profile or develop their current research profile in an interdisciplinary direction.

If several candidates for the position are equally competent in relation to research merits, candidates mastering digital research methodologies will be prioritized in two of the positions, and research competence within literature studies will be prioritized in the third position.

The Department
The Department of Communication and Arts conducts excellent, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research in the intersection between cultural studies, communication studies and media studies. We offer an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment, characterized by academic and methodological diversity in research and education. Our faculty produce research at the highest international level that feeds into our educational programs while simultaneously contributing to critical research and reflexive practice in relation to development and change in society, including public institutions, private organizations, NGOs, and cultural and media institutions.

Researchers in the department are organized in three sections, and the selected candidate is expected to join one or more of the 13 research groups:

Responsibilities and tasks
Your daily work will consist primarily of research, research-based teaching at BA and MA level, research dissemination, and administrative tasks.

As assistant professor we expect you to publish in high-ranking international outlets and leading national outlets in your field. We expect further that you take part in generating external funds for your own projects, research grants and other types of external funding; participate actively in one or two research group(s) and constantly strife to improve the research culture and academic citizenship at the department; partake in the development of our teaching activities; and take part in smaller administrative tasks requested by the department.

The position as assistant professor entails a short (5 hrs) obligatory introduction to the educational model of the University of Roskilde called Problem-oriented project learning (PPL).

The ideal candidate
The ideal candidate for the announced assistant professorships is expected to
  • demonstrate a progression in publications over time, as well as current research activity in the form of recent publications at high international level,
  • engage in research cooperation that meets high international standards,
  • contribute to enhancing the international recognition of the research of the department,
  • engage in external fundraising
  • play a role in executing and developing the educational programmes of the department,
  • contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the department,
  • participate in the department’s communication with the broader public,
  • take responsibility for the long-term well-being of the department and Roskilde University at large
  • actively contribute to the research environment by a visible and physical presence at the department, and
  • contribute to the visibility of Roskilde University's academic profile

Qualifications
The ideal candidate matches the following characteristics:
  • International research profile
  • Documented research production at an international level, including publications in the field’s internationally recognized journals/publishing houses
  • Higher education teaching experience within topics relevant to the department
  • Interest in project-based teaching and teaching in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Documented pedagogical qualifications, e.g. good teaching evaluations, and an interest to innovate within the educational field.
  • Documented research communication skills

Ability to teach in Danish is an asset and successful candidates who do not speak Danish (or possibly Swedish or Norwegian) will be requested to acquire the necessary skills in Danish within the first two years of service, to ensure that they can participate satisfactorily in teaching activities as well as in academic and administrative activities at the university. At the time of appointment, successful candidates must master English for academic purposes.   • Scientific production at an international level
  • Research potential
  • Other academic experience e.g. from organizing research conferences or seminars
  • Experience in teaching and education
  • Ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary collaboration in research and/or teaching

Terms of employment
The employment is full time, and you will refer to the head of section. The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Dean will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.
