Key tasks:
- Help build and repair ships
- Replace or repair metal parts of a ship's structure
- Weld various types of metal, following blueprints and ensuring that the structure can withstand the pressure of the ocean
- Inspect structures or materials to be welded
- Monitor the welding process and adjust heat as necessary
- Maintain equipment and machinery
- Use a variety of equipment and methods to permanently join together various metal parts
- Typically perform manual welding procedures using Shielded Metal Arc welding (SMAW) or Oxy-Acetylene torches, or use semiautomatic systems such as wire feeder machines
- TIG welders - responsible for the fabrication and welding of aerospace tubular, sheet metal and casting engine components
- TIG welders - tack welding, fabrication and fixtures to assist fabrication and welding
Skills:
- English - must be able to communicate in English
- Mathematical skills to read blueprints, trim metal objects accurately and interpret model sketches
- Understanding spatial reasoning for product dimensions
- Comprehending 2D and 3D models correctly
- Always attentive to detail and alert to ensure safety
- Ability to receive and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers
- Ability to read labels, safety warnings, and guidelines
Experience:
- Experience from shipyards
- Education or professional experience in a given position
