Assistant Professors in Electronic Systems (with the possibility of tenure-track)
  • Aalborg Universitet
  • Frederikskaj 12, 2450 København SV

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more positions as Assistant Professor in Electronic Systems are open for appointment from September 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The positions are limited to a period of four years (with the possibility of tenure track position). All positions are affiliated with the department’s research groups located at the university campus in Copenhagen.

Your work tasks
In these positions, you will contribute to the department’s research, teaching and knowledge exchange within one or more of the following areas:

  • cyber security
  • privacy engineering
  • cryptography and applied cryptography
  • computer engineering
  • edge or cloud computing and networking.

You will be part of one of the department’s research groups in Copenhagen, where you will collaborate closely with colleagues on developing new research ideas and turning them into visible scientific results and external collaborations.

You will develop your own research profile and contribute to the international research agenda within your field. This includes publishing in recognized venues, participating in collaborations across research groups and departments, and engaging with external partners and industry where relevant. You will play an active role in the department’s efforts to attract external funding by participating in and, over time, initiating grant application activities. As your research programme develops, you will coordinate your own projects and contribute to shaping an active and supportive academic environment.

Teaching and supervision are an integral part of the role. You will provide research based teaching and supervision within at least one of the subject areas related to your expertise. This involves planning and delivering courses at bachelor and master level, supervising project and thesis work in alignment with AAU’s problem based learning model, and, when relevant, co supervising PhD students. Under the guidance of more experienced colleagues, you will gradually expand your teaching responsibilities and contribute to the ongoing development of the department’s study programmes.

If appointed as tenure track Assistant Professor, the duration of the position will normally be for a six year period with the opportunity for promotion to a tenured Associate Professor position based on a positive assessment. During the tenure track period, you will follow a structured progress and promotion plan, including annual internal follow ups, a mid term evaluation after approximately three years with external input, and a final comprehensive assessment before the end of the period. The tenure track pathway is designed to support your long term academic development and to make expectations for promotion transparent.

Your competencies
You have a PhD degree in a relevant field and can document research experience at an international level within one or more of the areas cyber security, privacy engineering, computer engineering or edge or cloud computing and networking. You have a growing publication record with peer reviewed contributions in recognized journals, conference proceedings, books or anthologies, and you can demonstrate clear development potential in your scientific work. We value both independent contributions and collaborative work, as well as your ability to position your research within the wider international community.

You are motivated by research collaboration and have an interest in working with external partners such as companies, public organizations or other universities. Experience from participating in competitive grant applications is an advantage, and you are ready to contribute actively to future funding initiatives. You are also aware of the broader responsibilities that come with being part of a university community, and you bring experience in contributing to a healthy work environment, including collegial collaboration, equal treatment, diversity and an inclusive atmosphere.

In your teaching, you can plan and carry out individual teaching and supervision activities under the leadership of more senior staff, and you approach teaching with a clear focus on student learning. You communicate clearly and confidently in academic English, both in writing and orally, and you are willing to further develop your pedagogical competencies, for example through participation in pedagogical courses and through the preparation of a teaching portfolio.

Qualification requirements
For appointment as Assistant Professor, academic qualifications at PhD level are required.

In the overall assessment, particular emphasis will be placed on your research potential and your ability to develop an independent research profile.

For tenure track appointments, Aalborg University places special emphasis on your autonomy in academic and professional development, your potential and standing within your field, your experience from more than one institution (preferably including international experience), and your ability to progress towards the criteria for permanent employment as Associate Professor within the tenure track period. Over the course of the tenure track, you are expected to demonstrate a solid scientific output at an international level, continued pedagogical development documented through teaching evaluations and a coherent teaching portfolio, active engagement in academic environments and collaborations, and a growing track record in securing research funding and disseminating research to relevant audiences.

Aalborg University places particular emphasis on the following qualifications during the tenure-track appointment:

  • Demonstrated autonomy in academic and professional development.
  • Exceptional potential and standing within the candidate’s field.
  • Experience across multiple universities or research institutions, preferably including international exposure.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in academic English.
  • A clear trajectory toward meeting the criteria for permanent employment at AAU by the end of the tenure-track period.

Evaluation and promotion proces:

  • Annual internal follow-ups to review progress on the promotion plan and ensure the assistant professor remains on track.
  • A mid-term evaluation, based on external review, conducted by an internal assessment committee after three years.
  • A final review by an external committee after 5.5 years. A positive outcome leads to a tenured appointment as Associate Professor.

Transition to Tenure
The final assessment typically occurs within the last six months of the tenure-track period. However, candidates may request an earlier evaluation within the first four years. If the initial assessment is negative, a second evaluation may be requested during the final six months. A maximum of two assessments is permitted.

To qualify for promotion to Associate Professor, candidates must demonstrate

  • Research qualifications equivalent to the level that can be achieved on the basis of satisfactorily completed employment as tenure track assistant professor.
  • Documented scientific output at an international level, based on up to ten selected publications.
  • Evidence of pedagogical development, including positive teaching evaluations and a comprehensive teaching portfolio.
  • Active participation in academic environments and collaborative initiatives.
  • Proven experience in securing research grants and effectively disseminating research to relevant audiences.

Assessment will be based on Criteria for merit at the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Aalborg University, and the goals outlined in the progress and promotion plan.

Failure to request an assessment within the final year, or a negative final evaluation, will result in the initiation of dismissal procedures in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.
